Summer reading

The Tamaqua Public Library has summer reading programs for all ages."Build a Better World" is a program for children up to the age of 12. Participants will meet once a week for six weeks in one of two age groups.For children up to the age of 5, sessions will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning June 19.For those between the ages of 6 and 12, sessions will be held on Mondays, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. or 6 to 7:30 p.m. These sessions will also begin June 19.The 2017 Young Adult Summer Reading program will be held every other Friday from 3 to 4:30 p.m., starting June 23.For more information on any library program, call 570-668-4660.Free lunchThe South Ward Playground Association is hosting a free summer lunch program for all local children up to and including the age of 18. Lunch is being served weekdays, from noon to 1:15 p.m., at the South Ward playground.The program is an offshoot of the free school lunch program, with funding provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The nondiscriminatory program is open to all children regardless of race, origin, religion, etc. In addition to a healthy lunch, participants will be offered a variety of summer activities.The playground is located at the intersection of Penn and Oak streets in the South Ward.Summer concertsThe Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce continues its 11th Annual Summer Concert Series with an appearance by Cajon Outlaws, sponsored by Heisler's Dairy Bar, this Thursday, June 15.Concerts will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on select Thursdays throughout the summer months with all events to be held on the platform of the Tamaqua Train Station.Additional concerts will be: June 29, Six to Midnight, rock, sponsored by Tom's Auto Body and Marine; July 13, It takes Two, top 40s and classics, sponsored by Cal's Tire and Auto Services; July 27, Big and Bad Rockabilly Cats, sponsored by the Tamaqua Station Restaurant.Tamaqua seniorsThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens met June 8 with 60 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session and provided the inspirational reading "Look On the Sunny Side."One guest, Elizabeth Morse, and returning members Mary Herbin and Erma Leibensperger were given warm welcomes.Upcoming events include: June 14, farm market voucher day at the Tamaqua Salvation Army; June 29, celebration of May and June birthdays.The group is open to anyone 55 or older.Meetings are held at 1 p.m. Thursdays at the Tamaqua YMCA, 1201 E. Broad St.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.Activities for next week include: Tuesday, prayer gathering at 8:30 a.m.; Wednesday, Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, worship team meets at 7 p.m., worship team leaders meet at 8 p.m.Calvary UMThe Rev. Phillip Sabas will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Father's Day Sunday in Calvary United Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school for all ages is at 9:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, the Blackwood Quartet from Tennessee will present a gospel concert, at 6:30 p.m., at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle.A prayer meeting will be held at 7 p.m. June 21, for all ages.Child evangelism day camp will be held from June 25 through June 30 at the tabernacle.
