Train rides a highlight of Tamaqua Summerfest

It's time for the 27th annual Tamaqua Summerfest Celebration, held on Father's Day and sponsored by the Tamaqua Historical Society. This year's event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in Downtown Tamaqua.

Train rides are back this year with three trips planned, all starting from the historic 1874 Tamaqua Railroad Station. Departure times will be 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m., provided by the Reading and Northern Railroad.The morning run will head south to New Ringgold, while the two other trips will travel north through the Tamaqua Tunnel to the High Bridge trestle. The train will be diesel-powered and passengers will ride in vintage coaches equipped with toilets.Tickets are available at Tink's Antiques, 28 S. Railroad St., Tamaqua, which is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Credit/debit card orders may also be made by calling the historical society at 610-597-6722.Each round trip takes a little more than an hour and will be held rain or shine.Broad Street, and several side streets, will be turned into a street fair, complete with crafters, vendors, a car show, music, a historical re-enactment, horse-drawn carriage rides, a rubber duck race, public art display and Buster the Clown.Admission and parking are free.Summerfest is the first big celebration of the summer season in eastern Schuylkill County and spreads over several blocks of West Broad, South Railroad and Berwick streets and parts of Nescopec Street and Hegarty Avenue.The Tamaqua Historical Society Museum and Hegarty Blacksmith Shop will be open, but the 1801 Moser Log Home, the borough's first home, will not be open this year. Tamaqua Historical Society President Dale Freudenberger says the home "is presently closed awaiting permits for stairway and porch rebuilding projects."The newly formed Tamaqua Historical Re-enactors Committee will present an enactment of an authentic Irish breaker boy's funeral wake in the society's museum annex, 114 W. Broad St. The program will begin at 1:30 p.m. and last about 30 minutes.The car show will be conducted by Tamaqua Street Machine Association and will feature antique and classic cars. The show will be set up along South Railroad Street. People's Choice trophies will be awarded to the top three vote-getters at 3 p.m.Blacksmith Don Campbell of Hazleton area will demonstrate his skills in the historic 1848 Hegarty Blacksmith Shop on Hegarty Avenue. The shop was once the oldest continually run business in Schuylkill County, operated by three generations of the Hegarty family from 1848 until it closed in 1974.The rubber duck race will be sponsored by the Tamaqua Fire Police Association and will be held at 3 p.m. on the Little Schuylkill River in the center of town. The finish line is just south of the Cedar Street Bridge near Boyer's Market. Prizes are available and winners need not be present to win. For more information, call 570-778-4170. Rain date for the Rubber Duck Race will be June 25.Leiby's Carriage Service will provide the horse-drawn trolley car rides, which will be pulled by Belgian draft horses.A variety of music will fill the air, including a live broadcast of the WMGH Polka program with Polka Joe Manjack from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and DJ Shawn Frederickson spinning tunes from 1-5 p.m.Foods will include: homemade bleenies, halupki, halushki, pierogies, steak sandwiches, Hawaiian ice, fresh cut french fries, cotton candy, fudge, lemonade, homemade soups, pizza, funnel cake, Caribbean cuisine, Italian ice, meatball subs, pit barbecue sandwiches, baked goods and fruit salad.For more information, call 610-597-6722.
