Carbon Commissioners honor Weissport

The Carbon County Commissioners wished a belated happy birthday to Weissport Borough on Thursday.

Weissport celebrated the 225th anniversary of its founding on June 3. It was also the 150th anniversary of its incorporation as a borough.Commissioner Tom J. Gerhard said he attended the Founder's Day ceremonies, but the commissioners forgot to pass a resolution for the occasion."We would like to apologize for the tardiness of the resolution, unfortunately the commissioners were not made aware of the celebration," Gerhard said.The resolution thanked borough officials for documenting the town's rightful place in history. The Founder's Day celebration included a display of historical photos and news clippings. Duane Dellecker dressed up as Col. Jacob Weiss, the town's founder.Weissport was founded by Weiss in 1792. In 1867, it became a borough.The 225th anniversary is also known as a quasquibicentennial, while the 150th is known as a sesquicentennial.
