Commonwealth grads told 'strive to accomplish more'

More than 100 students received diplomas Wednesday night at Penn’s Peak in Jim Thorpe during the first commencement exercises of the Commonwealth Charter Academy, formerly known as Commonwealth Connections Academy.

High school principal Tony Rusnak opened the ceremony by greeting the student body and their families. Before receiving their diplomas, students heard from fellow students and executives from the academy, each telling the students to aim high, persevere, and expect success.Local graduate Darby Pender of Slatington opened the student remarks by telling her fellow graduates to remain optimistic in the struggles of life ahead.“There’s so much ahead, even when things get tough,” Pender said.“A positive outlook can make all the difference.”Pender referenced literary classics such as John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath” and Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.”She compared the struggles literary characters faced in trying to overcome struggle and make a name for themselves to the challenges her peers have and will face in finding success outside of academics. When asked about her reaction to being given the chance to speak at the ceremony, Pender said she was speechless, but honored. “It’s a big highlight of my senior year.”Pender intends to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing.Graduates also heard from Dr. Maurice Flurie, CEO of Commonwealth Charter Academy. Flurie reminded students to celebrate their successes, but always look forward to the next step.“Give each and every accomplishment sufficient time to be recognized and remembered, but do not rest there,” Flurie said. “Strive to accomplish more.”Other graduates voiced their excitement about graduating from the academy.Darin Blandford of Bensalem says he wants to pursue a degree in meteorology. Blandford is headed to Bucks County Community College and hopes to transfer to Texas A&M afterwards.Likewise Gabrielle Flank was excited to graduate. “I’m grateful for CCA and all they’ve been able to help me with,” said Flank. Flank, 19, owns two different businesses, the Frosting Company and Inspiring Honey Productions, and writes for the Huffington Post.“I couldn’t have asked for better teachers and a more supportive community.”This was the first year at the academy for both Flank and Blandford.Commonwealth Charter Academy touts over 9,000 students across Pennsylvania. Photo gallery:
