Lehigh Gap center hosts Trails Day activities

Saturday has been declared as National Trails Day by the American Hiking Society. This weekend, the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor will host several events at local trail locations giving people a chance to get out on the trail for some fresh air, exercise and adventure.

Lehigh Gap Nature Center has partnered with the D & L to host an all day celebration event beginning at 9 a.m., with a bird walk in search of various breeds that call the nature center home. A pond life exhibit from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. will include a chance to mingle with live reptiles and amphibians.At 11 a.m. the center will host a 4B walk to look for birds, butterflies, bugs and blooms with a seasoned naturalist.At 1 p.m., take a native plant garden tour through the native garden.Beginning at 7 p.m., the center will lead a Whip-poor-will hike. Hikers will meet at the Osprey House at 6:45 p.m., or at the upper parking lot at 7 p.m.The route will take hikers up Translater Lane to the top of the mountain by dusk to make the decent under the night sky."It's a unique opportunity to listen for Whip-poor-wills," said Amber Breiner, associate director and network development program coordinator at the center."It'll be quite an adventure," she said.All activities are free and family friendly. Participants are encouraged to wear proper hiking foot attire.The Slatington Trailhead will have a display of brochures, trail maps, snacks and water from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.The Jim Thorpe North Trailhead and Lehigh Gorge State Park is home of 36 miles of rail trail alongside the Lehigh River.Representatives from the corridor will be on hand with trail maps and updates on the Carbon County Pedestrian Bridge construction.The Weissport Canal trail location will host D & L representatives from noon to 6 p.m., where trail maps will be available.For more information visit:
