Lansford residents of all ages turned out on Monday to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The annual Memorial Day program put on by American Legion Post 123 was forced indoors by inclement weather Monday morning, but brought together residents young and old.Post Commander Nathan Krajcirik and Carbon County Veterans Affairs Director Henry Desrosiers spoke, with Krajcirik touching on the importance of Memorial Day.Panther Valley students also contributed readings. Emily Krajnak read Logan's General Order, which established the holiday; Abigail Paulus read the poem "In Flanders Field" by John McCrae; and Kendra Nelson quoted the Gettysburg Address.The master of ceremonies for the event was Richard D. Pogwist, past commander of Post 123.In addition to those who gave their lives in battle for the United States, the post also remembered 15 veterans from Lansford who passed away since last Memorial Day: Jack Anderson, Brian A. Brossman, James L. Dvorshock, Edward L. Gallagher, Edward "Buzzy" Gurka, William D. Knepper, Alex Maketa, Edward J. Penberth, Frank T. Piscelli, Ernest F. Rossi, John Sniscak Jr., Walter M. Spack, Chester J. Trojan, John J. "Punchy" Vanyak, and Frank R. Zlock.
