Schuylkill County spending more to fight addiction

Schuylkill County commissioners on Wednesday agreed to allow the Drug & Alcohol Program to spend more to combat addiction.

Commissioners granted program administrator Melissa Kalyan's request to approve contract increases with three groups.A contract cap for Firetree Ltd. went from $60,000 to $90,000 as of April 1; one with Schuylkill Community Action went from $45,124 to $66,124, also as of April 1.Commissioners also approved an update to the prevention contract with Clinical Outcomes Group to include funding for staff training for Too Good For Drugs prevention training.In other matters Wednesday, commissioners approved a request from Schuylkill Conservation District's agricultural program coordinator Andrea Reiner for $98,040 to purchase an agricultural conservation easement of the 93.52-acre property of Larry and Sally Reber of Wayne Township.The easement in effect preserves the Rebers' farm; it's the 101st farm in the county to be preserved.The program is under the umbrella of the state Bureau of Farmland Preservation.In other matters, commissioners issued a proclamation honoring the XI Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International 70th anniversary.The group promotes the professional and personal growth of women educators and educational excellence.The XI Chapter organized on June 28, 1947, in the courthouse in Pottsville.The group provides scholarships and grants to women pursuing careers in education.Commissioners reminded people the county courthouse will be closed on Monday in honor of Memorial Day.Commissioners meet next at 10 a.m. June 7.
