Schuylkill pushing for unpaid hotel taxes

If you own a hotel, motel, or a bed-and-breakfast in Schuylkill County, make sure your room rental tax is paid up.

The county is aggressively pursuing delinquent hotel room tax revenue. On Wednesday, commissioners authorized municipal claims against two businesses to recoup overdue revenue.Ravideep LLC, which owns The Pines Motel at 730 Claremont Avenue, Rush Township, owes $9,798 in unpaid room tax from October 2008 through March, according to the county solicitor's office.William L. Partridge and Rosemary V. Partridge, who own The Partridge House Bed & Breakfast at 315 South Centre St., Pottsville, owe $3,910 from October 2009 through 2015.The tax, which commissioners on April 26 increased from 3 percent to 5 percent, is levied on overnight accommodations. The increase, effective July 1, will help fund the county's contribution to a $1.4 million fire training center on Firemens Road just outside Frackville and boost economic development.Commissioners in August pledged up to $500,000 over 10 years for the center. The county visitors' bureau will continue to receive 3 percent of the revenue. The county since 2002 has imposed the tax, which county Finance Director Paul E. Buber said generated $281,419 last year.In April, commissioners Chairman George F. Halcovage Jr. said county Treasurer Linda L. Marchalk has been contacting establishments that have not paid the tax.He said that in some cases, the business owners were unaware they were subject to the levy.
