St. Luke's awards scholarships to 14 area seniors

Fourteen high school seniors from Carbon and Schuylkill counties were recently awarded scholarships from the St. Luke's Miners Campus.

The board of trustees Scholarship and the Medical Staff Scholarship are each 1,000 and presented to a graduating senior from seven area high schools who met the criteria of the award, St. Luke's said in a news release. The criteria required each recipient to be in the top 25 percent of his/her graduating class and be enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited four year college or university in the health care field.The board of trustees scholarship recipients are Julia Banning (Lehighton), Matthew Derr (Mahanoy), Adam Francia (Jim Thorpe), Karlee Gemino (Marian) Joelene Hunsinger (Weatherly), Chloe Markovich (Panther Valley), and Diedre Ressler (Tamaqua).Christina Caravella (Weatherly) Erika Cruver (Lehighton), Samantha Gnall (Mahanoy), Riley McHugh (Tamaqua), Brendan Morgans (Panther Valley), Delana Nalesnik (Jim Thorpe) and Nirall Patel (Marian) received the medical staff scholarships.The students were honored at a ceremony at Miners Campus. They were joined by 2016 scholarship winners Alexis Baddick, Muskan Khatiwala, Madison Ansbach, Desiree Malacusky and Jordan Reis.The students receive one half of the scholarship before they head off to college, and the rest when they complete their first year.
