Sons find Coaldale man overdosed in public park restroom

(AP) Marco Caruso lay passed out due to a drug overdose for 20 minutes with his young sons before a bystander found him, police said.

The bystander found Caruso’s 5-year-old sons inside a restroom at Wayne Grube Memorial Park in Allen Township, where Caruso lay unconscious in a stall and one of the boys kept pricking himself in the finger with a hypodermic needle as he tried to put the cap on.“Daddy is sleeping,” one of the boys told the bystander, according to the boys’ mother, Heather Liskanich.Caruso, a 32-year-old from Coaldale, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of endangering the welfare of a child. In exchange for the plea a second count was dropped.In a letter to Northampton County Judge Emil Giordano, Liskanich asks the judge to impose the maximum sentence against Caruso.“The scare that have been created for my children due to this incident will haunt them for the rest of their lives,” she wrote.Giordano can sentence Caruso to up to five years in prison.In her letter, Liskanich says Caruso told the boys to “wait and stay still” before he went into the stall. Caruso had methamphetamine in his pocket and a syringe next to him when police found him at 4:51 p.m. July 13, 2016.After the incident, the boys asked about their father constantly and were afraid to visit parks.Heroin, opioid fight is ‘job No. 1’ of Pennsylvania’s attorney generalOne of the boys kept repeating “Daddy had a needle in his neck,” according to the mother.Teachers told Liskanich the boys continue to ask questions and make comments such as, “Why won’t the doctors fix my daddy? I don’t have a daddy. My daddy used to buy me things. He never comes around anymore. Is my daddy dead?”She said her sons are afraid of doctors because they failed to heal their father.Caruso completed a drug and alcohol inpatient treatment program at Conewago Place on April 4, and inpatient substance abuse treatment at Lehigh County Center for Recovery on Feb. 7, 2017.Caruso will be sentenced at 8:45 a.m. July 21.
