Troopers shoot Northampton Co. man who threatened to blow himself up

State police shot a Northampton County man Saturday when he attempted to blow himself up.

According to Troop M Commander Captain Richard H. D'Ambrosio, troopers responded to the scene of a residence on Good Road in lower Mount Bethel Township Northampton County for the report of a suicidal man.

The man was not on scene when police arrived.

The man called his family member who was with the troopers and continued to threaten suicide.

He told his family member that if the police were called he would blow himself up with an incendiary device.

The man arrived on the scene in a vehicle and the troopers confronted him.

He had a device around his neck with a fuse attached (which turned out to be a firework mortar.)

After ignoring several commands to get out of the car and onto the ground the subject attempted to light the device (near the troopers) and was shot by the troopers.

He was transported to St Luke Hospital Anderson campus where he was pronounced deceased. No injuries were sustained by the troopers.
