Jim Thorpe Area School District has officially called off the tax assessment appeals that incited a groundswell of community protest over the past few weeks.

As of Monday, all appeals scheduled through the end of 2017 have been canceled. Solicitor Greg Mousseau is working to reverse appeals that have already taken place prior to the recent hearing.A press release from the board states that the reason behind the decision is that "too many taxpayers were unaware of the County Collection Law, which legally allows a municipality and school district to seek an increase in an assessed value based on a recent sale or cost approach."The district will be working to develop and communicate its intentions to properly inform taxpayers of the current law, and any plans for future appeals.
