Weissport to host Founder's Day festival

Nestled between the Lehigh River and the Lehigh Canal is one of the oldest communities in Pennsylvania. Weissport was founded by Colonel Jacob Weiss, a soldier in the Revolutionary War and a local affluent businessman.

Weissport's Founder's Day will be held from noon to 6 p.m. June 3The event includes festivities that celebrate both the 150 years of the 1867 incorporation as a borough and the 1792 founding of the borough.The event also adds entertainment, music, historical displays, free kids games, ethnic food and cake walk. Beltzville Lions will be offering free old fashioned picnic games and other activities for children, with prizes for winners.There will also be a self-guided walking tour of historical businesses and homes which were vital to the formation of the town.The town has a rich history as it was one of the main boat building hubs along the Lehigh Canal.Clarence Getz, a collector and historian is offering his unique displays of canal artifacts and photographs, which will be displayed at Jacob's Church.There will also be local food vendors offering foods made popular during the founding of the community. The festival begins at noon and ends with the cake walk at 6 p.m.There will be a Chinese auction to benefit homeless animals.Park and Franklin streets will be closed off to traffic allowing visitors safer access to view the displays at Jacob's Church.
