An incumbent Lehigh Township supervisor lost her bid for re-election in Tuesday's primary election. In the only other competitive races in Northern Carbon County, nominations were established in the Democratic and Republican parties for positions on the Weatherly Area School District Board of Education.

Lehigh TownshipIncumbent Jill Redash-Caposella, a Republican, was defeated in her quest for re-election to a six-year term on the board of supervisors. She lost to Lenny Weston Jr. by a vote of 48-31. There was no Democratic candidate.Longtime tax collector Teresa M. Barna, a Republican, was unopposed on both tickets. She collected 76 token votes from township GOP voters.There are two auditors positions to be filled by the electorate this year, although no one is running on either ticket for either of the positions, which include a six-year term and a four-year term.Weatherly Area School DistrictIn the school district balloting, three candidates won both Democratic and Republican nominations for four-year terms. They include Shay A. Wagner, Brian J. O'Donnell and Chad M. Obert. There were four nominations up for grabs, with two others each winning one side.In the Democratic balloting, winners were Wagner, who tallied 186; O'Donnell, 155; Melissa C. McGee, 138; and Obert, 132. Losing out were David Panckeri and Girard A. Fewins Sr., who tallied 118 and 110 votes, respectively.On the Republican side, the winners were O'Donnell, 291; Wagner, 279; Fewins, 247; and Obert, 229. Failing to win a nomination were McGee, 192; and Panckeri, 178.One nomination was available for a two-year term on the board, and the winners were Wagner on the Democratic side and O'Donnell on the GOP side.The Democratic voting had Wagner with 86; Obert, 46; O'Donnell, 45; McGee, 44; and Panckeri, 42.The Republican ballot totals were O'Donnell, 127; Wagner, 110; Obert, 72; McGee, 64; and Panckeri, 61.Voters in Lausanne, Lehigh and Packer townships, Kidder Township's North District and Weatherly and East Side boroughs participated in the district voting.Banks TownshipThere were no contested races in Banks Township, where the voters were asked to vote on four positions, and only unopposed Democratic candidates appeared on the ballot.For supervisor, Charles J. Schalles received 118 token votes in his unchallenged bid for a six-year term on the board.Meanwhile, the heir apparent to longtime tax collector Irene Makowiec, who is retiring after decades in office, is Marian C. Lockwood. The Democrat, who was unopposed both within her Democratic Party and on the GOP side as well, collected 126 complimentary votes.There were two uncontested candidates for the six-year and the two-year terms as auditors. They are Joseph R. Bodnar Sr. and Mary Beth Pelley, who collected 121 and 118 votes, respectively.Beaver MeadowsOnly three names appeared on the Beaver Meadows municipal ballot, including Democrats Jeffrey S. Bobish, who is running unopposed for re-election to a four-year term as mayor, and Robert J. Cryder III, who is seeking one of three nominations for four-year terms on the borough council. Bobish collected 41 "comp" votes from party voters while Cryder tallied 38.The third candidate on the ballot, Republican Mary Ellen Hines, who is running unopposed for the four-year term as tax collector, received 26 token votes.East Side BoroughEast Side Borough did not have any candidates on Tuesday.Its voters are slated to elect a mayor to a four-year term, fill three four-year terms and a two-year term on the council, and also seat a tax collector for a four-year term, but the Democratic and Republican ballots are both blank.Lausanne TownshipThere were only two candidates on the Lausanne Township ballot. Both were unchallenged.They include Agnes K. Klynowski, a Democrat seeking the six-year term on the board of supervisors, who received 14 complimentary votes, and fellow party member Carol Tulay, who is running for the four-year term as tax collector and collected 17 "comp" votes.There are two auditor positions also to be filled by the electorate, although no one is running for them. They are for six-year and two-year terms.Packer TownshipRepublican Adam Nyer was the sole candidate on the Packer Township ballot. He is seeking the six-year term on the board of supervisors and collected 71 token votes from his party's voters.No one is running on either ticket for two other positions in the township that are up for grabs, including the four-year term as tax collector and the six-year term as auditor.Weatherly BoroughWeatherly Borough voters are expected to elect four people to four-year terms on the borough council and a tax collector for a four-year term.For council, however, there were only two candidates, including Democrat Theresa D'Andrea and Republican Jeffrey Miller. They received 133 and 150 votes, respectively.The lone candidate Tuesday on either ballot for the tax collector's position was Deborah A. Kohler. She won the Republican nomination with 209 token votes.Hazleton Area School DistrictVoters in Banks Township and Beaver Meadows Borough participated in the balloting for school board seats in the Hazleton Area School District, where seven people sought four nominations on both ballots.All cross-filed on the Democratic and Republican ballots. They are Ed Shemansky, Mark Scarsella, Robert W. Childs, Linda DeCosmo, Bob Mehalick, James Chapman and Alexander C. Van Hoekelen.The Carbon County vote totals for them includes:Democrats: DeCosmo, 95; Chapman and Childs, 92 each; Shemansky, 90; Mehalick and Hoekelen, 75 each; and Scarcella, 56.Republicans: DeCosmo and Childs, 40 each; Shemansky, 38; Chapman, 36; Mehalick, 33; Hoekelen, 27; and Scarcella, 26.
