Deborah J. Gigliotti will face off against Jean Papay in November after securing their parties' nominations for the Carbon County Register of Wills/Clerk of Orphan's Court position in Tuesday's primary election.

Gigliotti, a Democrat, received 2,466 votes, beating Connie D. Brown, who received 1,032.Papay, a Republican, received 1,746 votes, while her opponent, Duane A. Dellecker, secured 1,401 votes."I think it went very well," Gigliotti said Wednesday morning, noting that she has served in the office under current register of wills Judy Moon, who is retiring after 22 years in office, for the past 12 years. "I know despite the lower voter turnout, I think it went very well for me. I am very grateful for all of my helpers and the voters. I don't look at them as a number, I look at them as a person and I thank each and every one of them."I want to congratulate Jean on the victory," she said of her opponent and stressed that she is going to run her general election campaign the same as she did for the primary."I'm going to do my best and base my campaign positively," Gigliotti said. "I've been in the office 12 years and I know the job and it would be the best transition for the citizens of Carbon County."Attempts to reach Papay for comment by deadline were unsuccessful.Papay has served the past six years as state Rep. Doyle Heffley's office manager.The register of wills is responsible for proving the validity of wills, and appointing an administrator in cases where someone dies without a will. They are responsible for collecting the state inheritance tax.As the clerk of orphan's court, they are also responsible for marriage licenses and adoptions, as well as the guardianship of children and incapacitated people.
