Challengers on Lehighton ballots

Two candidates won both Democratic and Republican nominations for four four-year terms up for grabs on the Lehighton Area School District Board of Education, while one of them joined a third candidate, who also won both nominations for two two-year terms that are expected to be filled by the electorate later this year.

Voters in Lehighton, Weissport and Parryville boroughs and Franklin, East Penn and Mahoning townships participated in the district balloting Tuesday, where 11 people ran on both tickets for the four-year nominations and nine of them sought two two-year term nominations.In the balloting for the four-year terms, newcomer Gail Maholick topped both the Democratic and Republican ballots and will be joined on both tickets by incumbent Stephen L. Holland. Joy Beers and David Bradley Sr. won nominations on the GOP side, Gloria J. Bowman and Duane Eidem advanced on the Democratic ticket.The Democratic balloting showed Maholick with 461 votes; followed by Bowman with 442; Holland, 440; Eidem, 419; and Beers, 402.Losing out on that side were Beers, 402; Stacey Lynn Duerst, 339; Katelyn R. Bear, 272; Bradley, 247; Frank L. Tamburri, 243; Rebecca Worthy, 234; and Phillip J. Liszka, 114.The Republican vote totals had winners Maholick getting 644 votes; Beers, 554; Bradley, 536; and Holland, 503.Failing to win a nomination on that side were Eidem, 502; Bowman, 472; Bear and Tamburri, 453 each; Duerst, 361; Worthy, 316; and Liszka, 115.Maholick and Larry E. Stern won the two Democratic and Republican nominations for two-year terms on the board.The two year terms were up for grabs after the resignations of Byron Arner and Marianne Dwyer in 2016.On the Democratic side, Stern was tops with 352 votes, 20 ahead of Maholick's 332.Losing out on that side were David L. Krause, 300; Beers, 207; Bradley, 174; Worthy, 136; Bear, 127; Tamburri, 121; and Liszka, 86.And in the GOP balloting for the two two-year terms, Maholick was the high vote-getter with 411 votes, while Stern followed with 401.Failing to win a GOP nomination in that balloting were Tamburri and Krause, 340 each; Bradley, 280; Beers, 261; Worthy, 206; Bear, 163; and Liszka, 51.If Maholick is elected to both a four-year and a two-year seat, she will choose which one she wants to fill and the board will appoint someone to fill the other vacancy.
