Schreiner signs with Lehigh

Baseball has been a big part of Tyler Schreiner's life for about as long as he could hold a bat.

The Northwestern senior grew up around the game. His father, John, was head baseball coach at Emmaus High School for most of Tyler's formative years.Last Friday, Tyler followed in his father's footsteps by signing to play Division 1 baseball. The Northwestern senior will play outfield at Lehigh University for the next four years. He chose the Mountain Hawks over Lafayette and Bloomsburg."I like their family atmosphere," Tyler Schreiner said of Lehigh's baseball program. "They have a good team. They also had a business school."Schreiner follows in his father's Division 1 footsteps. John played at Penn State before spending two seasons in the Kansas City Royals minor league system.Tyler has been named to the Colonial League all-star team in each of the past two seasons and is likely to make it three straight this year. He was named to the second team as a first baseman his sophomore season in 2015. Last spring he moved into his natural position in centerfield and earned a spot on the All-Colonial League first team.Since earning a varsity starting position as a freshman, Tyler Schreiner has been penciled in somewhere in the top half of the Tigers' batting order. He has helped Northwestern reach the past two Colonial League title games and with a couple of wins this week they could be playing in one more on Thursday. This year's he's batting a team-high .497 with a 34 hits in 74 plate appearances, including seven doubles, which is a team-high he shares with is brother Trevor. Tyler Schreiner is slugging at .647 this season and has a .500 on base percentage while scoring 24 runs for the Tigers. While he's accomplished a lot in his high school career, Tyler Schreiner knows he'll have to prove himself again at the next level."It's definitely been a dream for a while to play Division 1 baseball," he said. "But I just got there. I have not even played yet. I'm going to work for getting a starting spot or hopefully at least getting a lot of playing time as a freshman."He plans to add some size and strength to his 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame. He knows the level of competition is going to rise when he gets to the college game, but he also knows that it's still the game he's been played for the past 14 years."I think it's going to be better," he said of the Division 1 level of play. "But it's still baseball so it's basically the game."

Northwestern's Tyler Schreiner will attend Lehigh University to continue his baseball and academic career. Joining Tyler at the signing ceremony are his parents Michelle and John. MIKE HAINES/TIMES NEWS
