Carbon County officials are weighing their options before finalizing plans on a proposed office building that would alleviate some congestion in the courthouse.

On Thursday, the commissioners spoke about the plans for Susquehanna Street after Gerald Strubinger requested an update.The county plans to demolish the current archives/maintenance building on Susquehanna Street and construct a new multistory building to provide extra room for departments in the courthouse."We have been talking about that and how it shakes down and comes out, we'll have to wait and see," Commissioner William O'Gurek said, adding that the commissioners are looking at building the new structure next to the 76 Susquehanna St. office building.They want to create a single entrance for the two buildings to cut down on security costs.But there are many puzzle pieces still missing and the board said they are looking to hire an architect to help find the best plan to meet everyone's needs, including parking needs in the town.Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein said the board is working with the courts to see what offices could go down there and still function economically.O'Gurek added that discussions are also taking place about possibly building a fourth small courtroom in the new building to allow domestic relations hearings to take place there, as well as address a possible need for a fourth judge down the road."We're trying to think this thing through and make the best use of what we have down there for now and the future," he said.No plans have been determined and the commissioners are still in the early stages of the project.
