Schuylkill commissioners recognizes scholar-athlete

Schuylkill County commissioners on Wednesday recognized county 2017 scholar-athlete recipient Major Jordan, a senior at North Schuylkill High School, Ashland.

The son of Ron and Robyn Jordan of Frackville, he was named one of Pennsylvania State Football Coaches' Association's Top 105 prospects list for 2016.A linebacker for the Spartans, he will attend Lafayette College in Easton.Jordan thanked his parents, coaches, teachers, teammates, and the school district.The district, he said, "gave me the knowledge and preparation that will guide me for the rest of my life."Jordan challenged his classmates to find the motivation to be the best people possible.Jordan received a plaque, and the county scholar-athlete trophy, which will be displayed at North Schuylkill for the coming year.The commissioners held their regular public meeting at the high school to honor Jordan before his classmates.In other matters, commissioners proclaimed May 7-13 as National Drinking Water week in the county.The proclamation emphasized the importance of clean drinking water.Patrick M. "Porcupine Pat" McKinney, education coordinator for Schuylkill Conservation District, said "Schuylkill" is a Dutch word meaning hidden river.Also on Wednesday, commissioners named Daniel Daub, Tower City, and Richard Becker, Pine Grove, to the Sweet Arrow Lake Park board.The men will serve from May 10 through May 9, 2019.The county will hold a hearing to listen to opinions concerning this year's Community Economic Block Grant projects at 1 p.m. June 14 at the county courthouse in Pottsville.The courthouse will be closed next Tuesday, May 16, for the primary election.
