Fundraisers planned to benefit dog shelter

It's all about the dogs at the Carbon County Animal Shelter, and community support is imperative to keeping the pups happy as they wait for a forever home.

On Thursday, Susan Lovejoy and Louise Koch of the Blue Mountain Business Connections networking organization presented the county commissioners with a check for $1,122.50 from a craft fair they held in April.The event raised over $2,000 and was split between the Carbon County Animal Shelter and Carbon County Friends of Animals.Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard, who has been an advocate for the shelter since taking office, said that donations are what helps keep the doors open.Last year, the county budgeted $110,000 for the shelter and spent $93,000, but $23,000 was from community donations."We appreciate the donations," he said, adding that up until this past donation, the county has received over $9,000 for shelter operations in the past few months.He commended Tom Connors, shelter director, and the staff and volunteers he has there to care for the dogs.He also announced two events coming up that will also benefit the pups.At 6 p.m. today, Franklin Elementary will have a bowling fundraiser at Fritz Lanes in Lehighton. Money raised from the event will go to both the shelter and CCFOA.On Saturday, there will be a car show at Carbon Career & Technical Institute from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A rain date is May 20.
