Mahoning Township continued its discussion on the prospect of starting a safety committee for the township.

Following an annual loss prevention audit by insurance company HA Thomson, the board was presented with the option to start a committee, which could save the township 5 percent on its insurance, amounting to about $4,500.Earlier this month, the board discussed the idea before tabling it in favor of asking individual departments, including the police, ambulance, fire and road crew if they would be interested in forming a committee."I've got mixed feelings," Vice Chairman John Wieczorek said. "I've seen the benefit of it, even just the simple things like training, proper equipment, proper safety gear. But, also, I've been involved prior, where these things tend to get out of hand with extraordinary requests and investigations."Police Chief Audie Mertz said the police will consider a safety committee.Wieczorek said he will also bring up the idea to the fire chief.Supervisor Robert Slaw suggested that each department could have their own individual Safety Committee, as they would be more well-versed in issues dealing with the police, fire department, ambulance and so on.Supervisor Bruce Steigerwalt agreed, but suggested an annual or semiannual joint committee meeting to discuss issues among each department as well.The board ultimately decided to discuss the matter further with a representative from each department, as well as a representative from the insurance company.
