Local mom goes shark hunting

Friday night a single Kunkletown mom will try to land a shark on ABC’s hit show, “Shark Tank.”

Heather Stenlake is the inventor of the Bridal Buddy, a slip that helps brides solve the age-old question of how to use the restroom while wearing a wedding gown.In front of a national audience, Stenlake will present her product to the sharks in the tank — enormously successful, self-made multimillionaires and billionaires — hoping for a shot at the American dream.Stenlake came up with the idea for the Bridal Buddy about 15 years ago, believing there had to be a way a bride could use the bathroom without having half her bridal party in the stall with her to hold up her dress. She worked on developing her idea until she had children, then pushed it to the back burner until about two years ago when she came across her prototypes in a box in the basement marked “bridal slip invention.”It was time. The original design was a one-piece bodysuit with a skirt. Stenlake streamlined it, keeping the skirt with a drawstring around the hem. Then she added armholes to the skirt. The way the Bridal Buddy works, once the dress has been bundled into the bag created when the drawstring is pulled, the bride slips her arms through the holes and is able to hold her dress up by herself. In addition to the standard white Bridal Buddy, Stenlake now markets a Special Occasion Bridal Buddy, which comes in black for proms and other formal events. While her business, which launched in January 2016, is growing at a steady clip, she’s more than ready to take it to the next level.Ready to swim with the sharksStenlake’s visit to Culver City, California, to film her episode of “The Sharks” took place last September.Getting there was no easy journey.“It took many months of paperwork, videos answering questions and perfecting our pitch before we even got a solid date to come out to California,” says Stenlake. “Even then, you’re not guaranteed to air!”What happened during her episode is hush-hush.“Unfortunately, I can’t give any spoilers for who, if any Sharks went with me — but they were all so wonderful and really had a great reaction to the Bridal Buddy.”She says she knew which of the Sharks she’d be facing on air.“Going in the tank, I was very interested in Lori (Greiner). But I was very open to hear all and any offers.”Even without the help of a business partner with deep pockets, Stenlake’s design met with overwhelming success right out of the gate. After going live with the Bridal Buddy early last year, she realized sales of $23,000 the second month. Things haven’t slowed down either.“We are still seeing very steady sales since last year,” says Stenlake. “We are very pleased with the growth of Bridal Buddy.”One of the boosts she experienced came from another television appearance.“We got to be on the ‘Steve Harvey Show’ as well last spring, and that was a wonderful experience.”Stenlake says her future plans include expanding her offices and work area for shipping.“We would also like to put more money into marketing and more videos and photography to help new brides understand how the Bridal Buddy works.”Whether or not Stenlake hooks a Shark, she’s enjoying the ride.“I’ve had the pleasure of meeting so many great entrepreneurs and have learned so much in this past year. I know that team Bridal Buddy is on track to have huge growth and even greater success.”“Shark Tank” airs at 9 p.m. Friday on ABC.
