"I've been chasing this the whole year. It's tiring to go the whole season and not improve. But it was a great day, it's my senior year, and it's one of my last times running. That is the only thing I was focusing on right now."Jon Fikentscher threw 47-2 1/2 in the shot put, which gave Thorpe another gold. He topped teammates William Munson (second) and Derek Scott (fourth)."I was satisfied coming in and I felt pretty good," said Fikentscher. "I felt like I could throw a little bit farther. I'm going to try do the same thing next week that I did today."Rounding out JT's first-place finishes was Justin St. Hill, who jumped a 42-9 in the triple jump."I knew exactly what I had to do," he said. "I just qualified for districts in the last meet and I felt like I had something to prove here. I knew that my last PR wasn't the best I could do and I just tried to come out here and give it my best."As for Marian, Jarrin Geisinger was the league champion in the 100 with a time of 11.33."My legs are better and my knee is better; it hurt for a little at the Pine Grove invite," said Geisinger. Wheeler was also a part of the 400 and 1600 relay teams that won gold."I was a little nervous and a little bit shaky in the 200 trials," she said. "But coming down the back-stretch, I felt good, and I thought I was strong. I pushed myself. My one goal was to be undefeated this year. I think I was beat twice this year, so I was close. I was pushing, and going in to districts, I'm ready. I feel like I'm prepared and that I did everything I could."Brenna Karnish took home the gold in the shot put with a throw of 35-0, finishing ahead of Thorpe's Brooke Cope, who placed second. Karnsh just missed a second gold in discus, as North Schuylkill's Emma Green topped her throw of 112-9 with a mark of 113-1."I did OK, I was expecting to throw like a 36," Karnish said. "I'm just trying to get better. I'm happy I got first, but I still personally want to get better. I want to throw a PR in shot and disc, and hopefully I can take first in both of them."Aaron Bowman, Donovan Buchinsky, and Kaia Slaw all brought home gold for Lehighton.Bowman won the pole vault with a jump of 13-6, edging out Tamaqua's Matt Smarr, who came in second.Buchinsky jumped a 20-5 ½ in the long jump, which landed him on his feet in first place."Today was actually my senior night for baseball, but I'm going to have to miss that," he said. "I'd like to jump further, but first place is a great feeling, especially not being able to practice much with baseball and everything."The girls long jump was won by Slaw, who recorded a 16-5 ½."My last year record was pretty low compared to this," she said. " So I was very happy that I got to break it by so much. I'd just like to thank the coaches and the team for helping me out. I'm really excited, and I'm just glad I got to be such a big help to the team."Two members of the Tamaqua track team took home golds.Monika Shimko won the 800 in 2:18:58, while Marian's Tina Capparell came in second behind her. Shimko also anchored the Raiders' 3200 relay team, which came in first."It went pretty well," said Shimko after the relay victory. "We all ran our best splits of the season, so everything worked out in our favor. We're almost at the time we were at last year, so it's a good start for districts next week."The Raiders' Shanna Brinkworth won the pole vault with a jump of 9-6. She also placed third in the long jump." I am kind of where I want to be," she said. " I've been getting first in a good amount of meets … I came into the meet thinking I was going to get first place, and I guess that's kind of what happened."The girls 100-meter dash was won by Weatherly's Emily Zoscin in 12.91. The sophomore also placed sixth in the 200."I knew I had to win for Coach Kiddish, who passed away this summer," Zoscin said. "All of the training I did up until this point was for him and I knew I had to do it in his honor."PUTTING ON A SHOW … Although team scores didn't officially count for anything, Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, and Tamaqua would have finished first, second, and third.CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR … Times News athletes captured 17 silver medals on the afternoon.WE WANT MORE … Check out the Times News Sports Facebook page for interviews with local winners from not only the Schuylkill League meet, but also the Colonial/EPC meet.
