Yardwork?A nap?What does mom really want to do for Mother’s Day?We wanted to know, so we asked mothers on social media what they prefer to do on their big day.Those who preferred staying home far outnumbered those who enjoy going out to eat.Beyond that, even more said they enjoy doing something special with their families, while others are hoping for a day at home, in bed, in their pajamas, with unlimited nap time.Dining outThese mothers had no reservations about how they want to spend Mother’s Day.“My daughters and husband surprise me every year,” says Kissy Green. “It’s a great surprise. Different every year, but we usually go for a buffet.”“Breakfast at Country View Diner,” says Susan Behler. “The best food ever.”Nadine Frey is looking forward to brunch at Cracker Barrel or Perkins, while Lorraine Bognar says her dinner out will be for Italian food.Jeannine Ann Carroll is looking forward to dinner out. “So I don’t have to cook.”“Our family used to love to go to for a special lunch/brunch for Mother’s Day, after church,” says Lora Krum, who lost both of her sons two years apart. “Now my husband and I escape from town and try to avoid seeing all of the ‘intact’ families sharing Mother’s Day together ... one of the most difficult days of the year for Moms like me.”Staying in“I prefer staying in while my husband cooks both a magnificent brunch for me and my mom and then an amazing smoked dinner for me and his mom,” saysBrandy Kresge. “No restaurant can top his cooking! I am a lucky woman.”Mary Ellen Hawk says she prefers staying in and doing the cooking. “I love to cook and I got that love from my mom, so cooking for her, and the rest of my family, is what I like to do. This year my pasta machine and my bread machine will get a good workout!”“I enjoy being with my children and grandchildren all together and just having lunch/dinner with them at their house,” says Geralyn Hartman.Joanne Danko likes to eat in with her family, preferably on paper plates.“I prefer staying in if dinner is being prepared for me,” says Stephanie Nickerson. “I hate how crazy crowded restaurants are.”“I prefer brunch prepared and served at home,” says Jess Wheeler. “I don’t do crowds.”Stacie Corrado-Strack says she’d rather stay in. “Rather be home, or doing something I would enjoy. Order in!”Irene Lee Walker says that between her family and her husband’s, she hosts everyone for Mother’s Day dinner, while her sister-in-law hosts Father’s Day.“All I look forward to is the company of my children and grandchildren and their families at my house,” says Janice Mazur, “enjoying each other over an Italian meal or cookout. And no cellphones! That is the ultimate Mother’s Day gift.”“A dinner at home sounds amazing right now,” says Stacey Yarosheufski.Marge Ayers says she is staying in.“My kids have always made me breakfast in bed,” says Kara Paul. “The best!”Sheri Ryan looks forward to breakfast in bed, as does Tricia Acciani.“My kids always made breakfast in bed for me: Belgian waffles with strawberries and whipped cream, bacon and a Diet Coke.Other optionsLysa Grant says she’s too busy to celebrate Mother’s Day on Mother’s Day. “I prefer to celebrate the weekend before or after and preferably with something served in a pineapple.”“We go to an animal preserve each Mother’s Day and bring a lovely picnic lunch,” says Elizabeth Finger. “Lake Tobias is the destination. Years ago, when my children were small and we resided in South Jersey, we did Longwood Gardens.”“I’d prefer to be allowed to sleep in or take a nap,” says Amanda Winter.“Stay in,” says Connie Verzak. “Bring me meals. I don’t want to get out of my pajamas. Furthermore, if you could take the kids out for the day so I can watch the P & P miniseries in my PJs with a face mask on, that would be great.”Ana Isabel also wants to stay home in her pajamas, but can’t. “This year, my daughter has a camp out, and I won’t quite make it all day in PJs.”“All I want for Mother’s Day is a real, honest to God, uninterrupted nap,” says Delta Downs, “and maybe some post-nap tacos brought home to me. And then an after-tacos nap.”“Something chill,” says Ann Travis. “Last year we went for a hike in the mountains and then grilled out, which was perfect!”Betsy Jarnigan hates to go out for Mother’s Day. “It’s too crowded. I much prefer a picnic at our favorite spot in the mountains.”J.C. Hannigan says she prefers a stack of new books to restaurants. “And a day celebrating the little humans who made me a mom, doing something fun.”Candy Knappenberger is hoping to sleep in and for a seafood dinner at home. She’d also like her tea made for her and to watch a movie with her family. “Of course what I want to watch — probably ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’!”“I used to ask for a day of help in the yard,” says Cindy Becker. “Most of it was my domain, by my choice, but having two able-bodied men helping with the heavy stuff was great.”
