Marian routs Weatherly to stay hot

A team wants to be playing its best toward the end of the season.

And the Marian Colts are certainly playing their best baseball as of late, having won four in a row coming into their game with Weatherly on Monday. The Colts (11-6, 9-3 SL) were able to continue their recent trend, defeating Schuylkill League Division 3 opponent Weatherly 13-3 in five innings. It was the Colts' fifth win in a row. During that streak, Marian has scored 60 runs."The last four or five games, we've been hitting the ball really well," said Marian head coach Tony Radocha. "Our guys have been waiting for their pitches, and they've been finding the holes out there. I just think one through nine in the order, we're very focused. Weatherly didn't kick the ball around today either, they played a solid defensive game, we just hit the ball well."In the early going, Weatherly (5-11, 2-9 SL) hung in with the Colts. The Wreckers responded after Marian scored two runs in the first and a run in the second.Weatherly added a run in the second on an RBI single by Kevin Osifat that scored Lou Mastroddi, who doubled in the inning. The Wreckers also had a productive third, scoring two runs. A.J. Knepper and Chris MacNeal scored runs and each collected a hit while Mastroddi also added a hit.The Weatherly uprising tied the game at 3-3."This has kind of been the story of our season. We've been able to compete and stay in the game early, but we just kind of fall apart in the middle innings," said Weatherly head coach Mike Baran. "We've struggled during crunch time this season. I know we have the ability to better."The Colts went to "Smashville" in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs to get out to a 7-3 lead. Aaron Mason, Danny Keer, Ryan Cappel, and Billy Derr all came through with hits in the inning. Mason and Derr had RBIs.Marian added two more hits and a run in the fourth, but exploded in the fifth to end the game. The Colts had seven baserunners in the inning and scored five runs. Max Nolter had the big hit of the inning with an RBI double, while Keer, Cappel, and Quest Wilson each added RBIs.Defense was also a key of the Colts' success. After giving up three runs early, pitcher Jarod Paisley settled in, giving up just one hit between the fourth and the fifth innings."Today was a great team effort where we played a complete baseball game in all phases," said Radocha. "Right now, we're playing good baseball and we have a lot of opportunities in front of us. We just have to stay focused, and keep working hard every day and believe in our abilities."MASHING MASON ... Aaron Mason had the hot bat on the afternoon for Marian. Mason had four hits in four at bats, including a double and an RBI.FINISHING STRONG ...
