Continuance denied, hearings move forward

A request for a continuance with the Jim Thorpe Area School District tax appeals was denied on Tuesday morning, and hearings went on throughout the day.

At Monday's board of education meeting at Penn Kidder Campus, a crowd of approximately 150 people petitioned the board to withdraw their tax appeals, with residents and business owners saying that the increases would be devastating.

The assessment board denied the request. According to the law, requests for postponements of hearings have to filed in writing with the board at lease five days prior to the hearing.

Under the postponement section of the law, it is noted that the board may grant a continuance of any formal hearing. However, the board said that moving more than 600 meetings into the fall session would be impractical, as all hearings must be held by Oct. 31.
