Schuylkill teens meet May 15 for fifth annual youth summit

Schuylkill County commissioners will convene the fifth annual Schuylkill County Youth Summit on May 15 at Penn State Schuylkill.

Every year the summit continues to develop its basic mission to engage, equip and support our youth for the future. The summit will once again gather youth from all county high schools to engage them in making the county a better place for them to live, work, play and raise their families. This year's summit will concentrate on the results of the second Schuylkill County Youth Summit Survey responses that were gathered from almost 3,000 students in November/December 2016. Students were asked to rate 12 quality of life factors on what was important to them in the place where they would live, and then again on how they view Schuylkill County on these factors.Part of the day will ask the students to suggest opportunities for improvement in these quality of life factors in Schuylkill County. As always, the students will spend the last part of the day designing community improvement projects that they will work on for the next year. The Youth Ambassadors, a subset of the summit, meet every month throughout the school year to design the summit and to learn more about the issues that are important to them.A group of community leaders supports the Youth Summit as a community advisory group. Another group of community leaders works on issues relating to helping students know more about higher education and job opportunities in the county. The Youth Summit has become a significant resource for the county commissioners and other county leaders.
