Man gets probation in insurance fraud case

An Albrightsville man was placed on probation on Friday in Carbon County court for trying to defraud an insurance company.

David Dillon James, 28, previously pleaded to one count of insurance fraud before Judge Steven R. Serfass. The Northeast Insurance Fraud Task Force charged that James attempted to defraud Safe Auto Insurance. According to investigators, James was involved in a crash on Sept. 12, 2016, along Route 534 in Penn Forest Township but did not have any insurance. The same day he applied for auto insurance with Safe Auto and received a policy a short time later. After receiving the policy approval, he filed a claim for the Sept. 12 crash but said it occurred on Sept. 19 after he was approved for insurance.Serfass placed him on probation for a year and ordered he pay a civil penalty of $500, make restitution of $500, render 100 hours of community service, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation.
