Colts surge past Panther Vy.

A rally in baseball is an exciting thing to watch.

To see a team battle back, getting clutch hit after clutch hit, is one of the most exciting aspects of the game.On Monday, Marian was able to string together one of the most impressive rallies of the season.Facing rival Panther Valley and an early 5-2 deficit, the Colts bats heated up as they came back to defeat the Panthers 9-5 for an important Schuylkill League Division 3 victory. At the start, Panther Valley looked poised to run away with this one. The Panthers had a big first inning, pushing across three runs with Anthony Micholik, Tristan Blasko, and Zach Kindt all scoring.Kindt came through with the mash of the inning, crushing a two-run homer over the center field fence. Jonathan Hafer also came through with an RBI in the inning."We've actually been getting out to really good starts this season, which is opposite of last year, but now it seems we're just getting complacent in the middle inning," said Panthers manager Rich Evanko. "We have to keep our foot on the gas pedal and play consistent baseball in every inning."The Panthers (7-7, 5-4) added two more runs in the second to extend their lead to three after Marian scored a run in both the first and second innings.Blasko, who had two hits on the day, drove in a run and Hafer also scored in the inning on a throwing error. However, that was all the offense the Panthers would generate the rest of the afternoon. The Colts, after scoring single runs in the first and second innings, just kept plugging away. Danny Keer scored a run in the third, bringing the Colts within two as Ryan Cappel came through with the only hit in the inning. The fourth inning is when the Marian bats started to really heat up. Three hits in the inning from the Colts' top of the lineup were able to produce two runs and a tie game. Keer, Gabe Bauer, and Max Nolter all collected hits, with Nolter knocking in a run."I always tell our guys we need warriors out there, not worriers. We just needed to keep chipping away at their lead, and the kids really delivered with the bats," said Marian head coach Tony Radocha. "We showed a lot of resiliency and toughness. We came back and made some big plays. That's what this game is all about."Marian (8-6, 6-3) would then use the long ball to extend its lead. Jarod Paisley blasted a solo home run over the left field fence in the fifth inning, and in the sixth Keer took a pitch up in the zone out over the center field fence for a three-run smash to extend the Colts' lead to four.As much as offense played a key part in the Colts' comeback, it was Marian's defense that was just as impressive. The Colts made some tough plays in the field on some sharp hit balls from the Panthers. Meanwhile, Keer, who was on the mound, settled in after the first two innings to shut out the Panthers through the sixth."We have a lot of guys that can play multiple spots in the field, so when we move people around, we can continue to be effective," said Radocha. "We played good team defense today, and we used our athleticism to make some tough plays. This is an effort that we have to build off of."KILLER KEER ... Marian's Keer was extremely impressive at the plate. Keer, who is headed to Division II Sheperd University in West Virginia to continue his academic and baseball career, came through with three hits and four RBIs, including a three-run blast in the sixth to put the game away for the Colts.TIMELY DEFENSE ... After giving up five runs in the first two innings of the game, the Colts defense was stellar. The Panthers didn't score a run for the rest of the game, and were held to just four hits over the next five innings.Marian 111 213 0 - 9 13 1Panther Vy. 320 000 0 - 5 7 2Keer, Cappel (6) and Nolter; Micholik, Goida (6) and Goida, Taras (6).
