Tamaqua Hunger Weekend to be held Friday-Sunday

Feed the hungry.

This year's Tamaqua Community Hunger Weekend will be held Friday through Sunday.The fourth annual Hunger Walk, sponsored by the Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network, will be held Sunday.Registration for the walk will be held at 1:30 p.m. that day at the St. Luke's parking lot on Pine Street in Tamaqua. The walk begins at 2 p.m. The rain date is May 21.Paul Dodson, event organizer representing TAFFN, said the walk will start at Pine Street, continue to Broad Street, travel east to the Tamaqua Insurance Center, cross the street and return to Pine Street back to the parking lot.After the walk, Dodson said there will be an ice cream social for those who walk at the Tamaqua Community Art Center. There will also be a recognition program at the Art Center for those who helped with the walk, as well as the other aspects of Hunger Weekend, he said.Other activities include the Empty Bowl Event (soup tasting), which will be held from 1-4:30 p.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, where participants will have their choice to taste one kind of soup for $5; to taste all the soups for $10, or to taste all the soups and get a free handmade ceramic bowl for $15. Numerous restaurants and bakeries have been contacted to participate.Dodson said the purpose of Community Hunger Weekend is to collect food and money and distribute it evenly among the borough's three food banks: The Salvation Army, Trinity United Church of Christ and the Primitive Methodist Church.Letters have been sent out to Tamaqua area businesses and organizations inviting them to participate by making monetary donations, or sponsoring and walking in the Hunger Walk, or asking people to collect food that would be donated to the three food pantries for distribution to anyone living in the Tamaqua Area School District, he said.Dodson said last year's Community Hunger Weekend raised $6,300 and collected 83 boxes of food that were distributed among the borough's three food banks.Download information and participation forms at
