Parkland tops Pleasant Vy.

The high school tennis season entered an unexpected phase for Pleasant Valley over the weekend when it played in the District 11 Team Tournament.

The Bears, who came into the tournament as the No. 7 seed, dropped a 5-0 Class 3A quarterfinal round decision to No. 2 seed Parkland."We were getting games off of them, I saw a lot of good points, a lot of good rallies, so that was good to see," said Pleasant Valley coach Mark Allison. "We're young too, we only have two seniors in the starting lineup this year, so I think it was a great experience for our kids."With the young group that we had, I was hoping to go .500 this season. I never expected to go 11-7 and get into team districts. So that was really nice for me and for the team."Allison pointed out that Pleasant Valley will return all three singles players - Jake Ammerman, Najja Francis, and Josh Schaffner - for next season."Everybody knows that Liberty, Parkland and Nazareth are the top three," said Allison. "Liberty's undefeated and the other two have just one loss, so those three will likely be battling it out for the team title."Parkland (15-1) advances to host third-seeded Nazareth Tuesday afternoon in the semifinals. The match of the day turned out to be at No. 2 singles where Parkland's Arvind Parthasarthy downed Francis 6-0 in the first set, but then had to battle for a 6-4 win over Francis in the second set to take the match. At No. 3 singles, Schaffner also battled back after a 6-1 loss in the opening set to make the second set interesting at 6-3.Allison is excited about the development of his young players and what he expects will be an interesting season next year after those players continue to develop over the summer. The singles players gained experience in the singles portion of districts and the District 11 doubles tournament has yet to be played."Our No. 1 doubles team will be in the tournament, I know that for sure," said Allison. "We'll see if anybody else makes it."Parkland 5, Pleasant Valley 0SinglesAneesh Kapoor (P) def. Jake Ammerman 6-1, 6-1; Arvind Parthasarthy (P) def. Najja Francis 6-0, 6-4; Alex Son (P) def.
