Ashtown Drive Bridge project to cost over $77K

Work to fix a historic bridge will cost Lehighton $77,580.

On a unanimous vote, borough council on Monday agreed to award a contract to AR Popple Construction, Wilkes-Barre, for the Ashtown Drive Bridge Rehabilitation Project on Ashtown Drive.Borough Manager Nicole Beckett said the borough has $70,000 budgeted for the project, while the balance will be paid from liquid fuels, as the account has the funds to cover the difference."Our estimate was around $60,000," Beckett said. The work includes activities and materials to install concrete underpinning along the two abutments and one center pier of the bridge structure; to provide road closure signage; water diversion; and erosion and sediment measures.Council agreed to advertise the project in December, per correspondence from Coleman Environmental Engineering LLC.Beckett previously said the borough has been working with McMahon Transportation Engineers, which is the state Department of Transportation's bridge inspectors, on the substructure repairs to the bridge. She said the borough received its Department of Environmental Protection permit in mid-2016 to enter the stream.
