Gavin Edmonds, a kindergartner at West Penn Elementary, won third place for the 2016 annual phone book recycling program, sponsored by the Office of Solid Waste and Schuylkill Keep It Pretty.

Gavin, 6, the son of Andrea Edmonds and Gregg Edmonds of Andreas, collected 475 books. He was awarded $100.Commissioners on Wednesday presented him with a certificate for his accomplishment as his parents and grandparents, Kathy Forke and Carmen Forke, watched.Gavin also led county officials and visitors in the Pledge of Allegiance to open the meeting.Commissioners also recognized the recipients of the "Skip" Dr. Harry A. Crosswell and Mary Jo Crosswell Environmental Citizenship $1,000 scholarship awards.They are Cassandra Wranitz, a student at Nativity BVM High School, Pottsville, and Evan M. Gerhard, a student at Schuylkill Haven High School.Both were praised for their strong interest and work on environmental issues, and their community involvement.Commissioners also honored two young people who were awarded $500 scholarships by Women Who Care.Both students were commended for their volunteer efforts and work on behalf of their communities.They are Michaela Susko, a student at Marian High School, and Tyler R. Zimerofsky, a student at Nativity BVM High School.Women Who Care is a community betterment group based in Orwigsburg.Commissioners also issued a proclamation recognizing May 2017 as "Older Americans Month."The presentation was attended by representatives of the county Office of Senior Services.
