Miller ready to take over at Lehighton
The Lehighton Area School District didn't have to look far to find its next boys basketball coach.
Trevor Miller was approved unanimously Monday by the school board to replace Rich Oertner. Miller, a 2007 Lehighton graduate, is in his fourth year as a Business and Computers teacher at the high school."It's very exciting," said Miller. "To be able to coach at my alma mater, it's kind of a dream come true."Miller has grown up around the game, spending the past seven seasons working with his father, Jeff, and the Northern Lehigh boys' basketball team. After coaching the middle school program, Trevor has been an assistant with the varsity squad while also serving as the head coach of the junior varsity team for the last three years. In addition to his time with the Bulldogs, Trevor has also been the head coach of Lehighton's golf team for the past three seasons, a position he intends to keep moving forward.Lehighton Director of Student Services and Facilities Planning Kyle Spotts believes that background will help ease Miller's transition into his new role."I'm excited," said Spotts. "He's a Lehighton grad. Anytime you have someone that's been through the program, they have that passion for it."And that's one of the things that really came through during the interview process - his passion and want for this job."Miller's assistants at the varsity level will be Rick Hunsicker and Casimir Kosciolek. Kosciolek coached Miller during his three years playing varsity basketball at Lehighton."He has been a mentor to me," Miller said of Kosciolek. "A lot of things he preached when I played, we plan to still use at Lehighton. He has had a huge influence on my life. In my opinion, there are not many better than him."Now, Miller is ready to create his own legacy - and maintain a tradition of success established by his predecessors."My expectations don't change from what they already are here," he said. "We want to win. We want to win Schuylkill League and District 11 titles. The Schuylkill League is tough, and the kids I have are tough kids."I met with all of the players today and they're ready to go. They're excited."Miller takes over the program after Oertner's departure last month.Oertner had been the Indians' head coach since 2011, and compiled a record of 73-68 during his tenure. The Indians were 16-7 this year, and qualified for the District 11 playoffs for the fifth straight season. Before Oertner's arrival, the Lehighton boys basketball team had just five victories (5-85) in the previous five seasons."I just want to thank coach Oertner for his time and what he's done to rebuild the program," said Spotts. "He did a tremendous job."
