Palmerton woman sentenced on two drunken driving charges

A Palmerton woman was sentenced to a county prison term, then a lengthy period in the county's Intermediate Punishment Program on Thursday after previously pleading to two driving under the influence charges - one for a controlled substance and the second for alcohol.

Tricia Gayle McGarvin, 56, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve a total of 90 days in jail followed by 57 months in the IPP with the first nine months on electronic monitoring.She was arrested on the first count on Feb. 15, 2016, along Route 443 filed by Lehighton police. She was stopped for erratic driving. A test revealed a 0.20 BAC.On June 3, she was stopped by state police at Lehighton along Route 248 at Parryville for speeding. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.By entering the IPP, McGarvin avoided spending a year in jail on the second DUI conviction.She was also ordered to pay fines totaling $2,000, license suspensions totaling two and a half years, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, render a total of 100 hours of community service, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while in the IPP.She was given credit for time spent in a drug inpatient rehabilitation program totaling 50 days. She had 40 days to serve on the prison term and will begin it on April 27 at 10 p.m. and serve it on consecutive two-day periods until the 40 days is served in full.
