Catasaqua woman killed in 248 crash; was traveling 120 mph

A Catasauqua woman was killed early Saturday morning on Route 248 outside of Palmerton.

State police at Lehighton said Candy L. Growden, 48, was driving a 2006 Ford Mustang at 120 mph. She passed a car on the left and then went back into the right lane, driving off the shoulder of the road.

Police said Growden struck a cement curb and lost control, hitting a cement wall. She continued at least 280 feet on the shoulder of the road and hit a guiderail. Police said 64 feet of the guiderail was damaged and went through the front of the car and out the back,

Carbon County Coroner Robert W. Miller Jr. pronounced Growden dead at the scene at 2:04 a.m.

Palmerton Police Department, Swiftwater State Police, Palmerton EMS and Aquashicola Fire Department assisted at the scene.

The car was towed by Strohl's Towing.
