Pleasant Valley director talks absences

Pleasant Valley school board director Steve Borger's continued absences from board meetings has come into question.

Since January 2016, the minutes show he has attended four meetings: Feb. 25, 2016; March 24, 2016; May 12, 2016; and Jan. 12, 2017.Board President Russell Gould said shortly after Borger was re-elected to the board he took a job that is currently requiring him to work afternoons, which makes attendance at the meetings difficult.Borger was contacted and confirmed Gould's comments. Borger has been employed by the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission for about 18 months and was recently moved to the 3 to 11 p.m. shift."Your livelihood and that of your family has to come first," Borger said in a phone interview. "I did not run for the school board to not fulfill my obligations, and whenever my schedule permits I will attend the meetings. In the meantime, I keep in touch with other directors. I was involved in the recent search for a new superintendent and I intend to hold my position on the board."Gould confirmed that Borger stays in contact with him and other members of the board and has been present and active in the recent search for a new superintendent and other board activities.According to Gould, Borger had indicated his desire to stay on the board and is hoping that his employment will soon allow him to return to the district meetings."I have looked into some other possibilities at work that could become available in the future that would make it easier for me to attend that meetings," Borger said."In the meantime, I keep up with my emails and any other ways to keep involved in what's happening."
