Market submits plans to expand

The Jim Thorpe Market may soon be expanding its retail space to include a liquor and beer store.

On Tuesday, the Carbon County Planning Commission reviewed a proposed land development on the property surrounding the Jim Thorpe Market, 1 River St., Jim Thorpe.The plans call for constructing a 5,000-square-foot commercial retail building, which will house a Pennsylvania Wine and Spirits store and a beverage store.Ivan O. Meixell Jr., county planner, said that based on the proposed plan, there are a few minor preliminary/final plan requirements that must be addressed, but said that based on that he felt the board could recommend plan approval of the development.The Carbon County Planning Commission reviews proposed projected and recommends to municipalities based on its review of the plan and how it conforms to the municipality’s land development ordinances.The plan now goes to Jim Thorpe for further review. The planning commission also reviewed a proposed storage unit development at the intersection of Route 534 and Meckesville Road in Penn Forest Township and recommended conditional plan rejection based on the findings.The plan calls for Beltzville Enterprises LLC constructing storage units, total unknown based on the drawings, of varying sizes in a 60,750-square-foot space.Meixell said based on his review of the site, he found 17 areas of the plan that need to be addressed to conform with the requirements of the Penn Forest subdivision and land development ordinances.
