Minersville gets unprecedented 4 players on team

To the winner goes the spoils, and no girls basketball team in Pennsylvania exemplified a winner this winter more than Minersville.

The Battlin' Miners were the only team in the state that went undefeated, going 31-0 en route to a PIAA Class 2A championship. Minersville more than doubled the score of its opponents in those games, winning by an average of 36.8 points. So it shouldn't be much of a surprise that the Miners are well-represented on the 2016-2017 Pennsylvania Sports Writers All-State Girls Basketball Team. However, they carried their dominance on the court into the offseason accolades by placing an unprecedented four players on the 16-player Class 2A team in a poll of statewide media. In addition, Minersville coach Jared Homa was an overwhelming winner for coach of the year in his classification.Pine-Richland's Amanda Kalin (6A), Washington Trinity's Sierra Kotchman (5A), Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic's Sam Breen (4A), Neumann-Goretti's Chyna Nixon (3A), Bishop McCort's Haley Thomas (2A) and Lebanon Catholic's Alexis Hill (1A) were the players of the year in their respective classifications. The 2A classification had an unusual array of talent for schools with smaller enrollments. Thomas and fellow first-team pick Karson Swogger of Bellwood-Antis have signed with Division I St. Francis University, while Abington Friends' Jade Young is headed to Hartford, and underclassmen Diamond Bragg (Camp Hill), Alexa Williamson (Chartiers-Houston) and Alli Campbell (Bellwood-Antis) already hold Division I scholarship offers. Lili Benzel is the all-time leading scorer at perennial state power Bishop Guilfoyle, and Bronwyne Mellott accounted for more than 2,300 points at McConnellsburg during a career in which she was voted all-state four times. The quality of Minersville's players and play, though, couldn't be overlooked. Two Miners - Adrienne Kroznuskie and Abby Schoffstall - made the second team. Both are seniors. Schoffstall was a third-team all-state pick as a junior. In addition, Minersville senior Emily Mealey and junior Maggie Wigoda were voted to the third team. All four Minersville all-staters averaged double figures in scoring this season as the Miners won Schuylkill League, District 11 and state titles.Minersville and Bellwood weren't the only schools with multiple all-state picks. Nixon, an Ole Miss recruit, edged teammate and West Virginia-bound Ashley Jones for 3A player of the year after they led Neumann-Goretti to a PIAA championship for the third year in a row. Meanwhile, two other Philadelphia Catholic League programs netted three selections apiece. State champion Archbishop Wood had three players on the Class 5A team: first-teamer Katie May, second-teamer Cassie Sebold and third-teamer Shannon May. Hannah Nihill made the Class 6A second team from Cardinal O'Hara, while Kenzie Gardler and Mary Sheehan each made the third team.PIAA runner-up North Allegheny also had two players on the 6A third team, Rachel Martindale and Hailey Zeise. Southern Lehigh teammates Amanda Mobley and Olivia Snyder were recognized together in 5A.In 4A, Neila Luma made the first team and Taylor Medina the third team from state champion Bethlehem Catholic, while Madison Demski and Molly Mraz of runner-up Villa Maria of Erie were on the first and second teams, respectively.Four of the coaches of the year led their teams to PIAA championships: Homa, Boyertown's Jason Bieber, Archbishop Wood's Mike McDonald and Bethlehem Catholic's Jose Medina. A pair of District 6 coaches who got their squads close to state gold, though, picked up the most votes in Class 3A and Class 1A, respectively. West Shamokin's Frank Nagy eked out the most votes in 3A Meanwhile, Juniata Valley's Rachelle Hopsicker won convincingly in Class 1A.
