NL's Farber headed to Penn

For Ryan Farber, the University of Pennsylvania was the perfect fit.

As accomplished in the classroom as he is on the mat, the Northern Lehigh senior on Wednesday announced he would continue his education and wrestle at the Ivy League school."I took a couple of college visits, and they were all great schools," said Farber. "But overall, it came down to I wanted to go to a great school that had a great education and a good, solid wrestling team."And I think Penn really has that balance. They're well known for their academics, and they also have a great wrestling team."Farber, the 2016-17 Times News Wrestler of the Year, enjoyed another stellar season this past winter, which culminated with a runner-up finish at the PIAA Wrestling Championships a year after placing sixth in Hershey. But Farber is interested in more than just wins and losses - and it shows.Farber, who will study Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Pennsylvania, which boasts a Division I wrestling program, is a member of the National Honor Society, class Vice President and Vice President of the Patriot Club at Northern Lehigh."It's important to set myself up for a good, successful future," said Farber. "I'm not quite sure exactly where it's going to be yet or exactly what I want to do in the future, where it will lead - if it will have to do with wrestling or something completely different - but I just want to set myself up to be successful when I graduate from college."Farber had several options when going through the recruiting process, but ultimately settled on the Philadelphia school."I took visits to Lehigh, Bucknell and Columbia, and also Penn," Farber said. "I pretty much narrowed it down to Penn and Lehigh at the end. It was a tough choice but I thought Penn was a better fit for me."I can't wrestle my whole life - eventually I'm going to need to get a job after college wrestling is over. So obviously Penn will set me up with graduating from there with a great degree and a great job. Overall, I think that was the determining factor."For Northern Lehigh head coach Scott Snyder, seeing Farber, a three-time District 11 champion, take the next step in his career is something he always thought was possible."I'm incredibly proud of Ryan," said Snyder. "We always kinda had those hopes for him to get out there and wrestle Division I. It's something he's always wanted to do. He had other goals, and kinda fell short of them, so it's nice to see him bounce back quickly and set his sights on some new goals."With going to Penn, and the program they have and academics they have, I think he's going to put himself in a good position to achieve them. He's not the kind to stray away from hard work."That drive has led Farber to great successes, with many more sure to come."One of my goals always was to continue wrestling at a D1 school with strong academics," said Farber. "I didn't know if I would be attending an Ivy League school. But I wanted to wrestle at the D1 level, and excelling academically put me in a place where I could wrestle at the D1 level at a great Ivy League school like Penn."
