Marian rallies to defeat Weatherly

WEATHERLY - There is no clock in baseball - that's the beauty of the sport.

Weatherly coach Mike Baran has been trying to impress upon his team the need to make plays, get outs and score timely runs. Unfortunately, Baran's team is in a lock-down phase unsure of what is around the corner. The Wreckers were pestering a more seasoned Marian club for three innings on Wednesday, holding a 4-3 lead at that juncture. In some sports, Weatherly could have tried to slow things down and run out the clock. That isn't an option in baseball.Marian spoiled the Wreckers' upset bid by exploding for a pair of five-run innings and cruised to a 14-5 Schuylkill League Division 3 victory."We're still learning, and we are still trying to find our way," offered Baran, the second-year skipper. "We've come close a couple of times. Then we kind of implode. We did that against Tri-Valley, and today we're in the game and then we started to throw it around."Baran was alluding to the fourth inning when the Colts scored five runs on just two hits. After surrending a leadoff hit to Marian's Ryan Cappel, Wrecker starting pitcher Al Kalinowskie recorded a strikeout. But then three straight errors opened the flood gates."We are a very good hitting team and we can score runs in bunches," said Marian coach Tony Radocha. "Our problems are the inconsistency on defense. We have a big inning, and we get a good pitching effort, then all of a sudden we are booting it."Radocha was correct on all counts as the Colts committed five errors in the game, but made up for it with a blistering 16 hits, including eight from the middle of the order as Daniel Kerr, Max Nolter, Anthony Collevchio and Cappel all had big games. But no Colt had a better day than No. 9 hitter Mike Latoff, who was a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI."We've got bats up and down the lineup, and that makes us a very dangerous hitting team," offered Radocha.Weatherly (1-3, 0-2) managed to collect nine hits of its own with Steph Yurchak leading the parade with a single, a double and an RBI. Jeremy Moser and Kevin Osifat each added two singles. After Marian (4-2, 3-1) grabbed the lead in the fourth, Alex Kubishin came on in relief for the Colts and allowed only three hits the rest of the way. The freshman fanned seven and walked one."We needed this one, after the way we played against Shenandoah," said Radocha referring to a 4-3 loss the day before.TIGHT RACE .. Marian moved back into first place in the division when Shenandoah lost to Panther Valley Wednesday. The Colts, Panthers and Devils all currently have one loss.WEB GEMS... The Wreckers turned a double play in the third when Nolter lined out and Keer was doubled off first. The Wreckers also made a tremendous play nailing Nolter as he tried to leg a double into a triple later in the game. The Colts turned a snappy 5-4-3 around-the-horn double play, killing off a potential fifth-inning rally by Weatherly.BOOSTERS... The Weatherly Baseball Boosters christened its concession stand at the game. Cathy Ray's boosters are now serving food as home games.
