A Jim Thorpe man, who posed as an attorney and took money from victims as retainer fees, entered guilty pleas in Carbon County court on Tuesday afternoon.

Christopher Jonathan Miller, 29, pleaded guilty to one count each of impersonating a licensed attorney, theft by deception and possession of a controlled substance.The drug count stems from the theft of diazepam from a borough resident.Miller admitted he posed as an attorney and took money from people as retainer fees. He said he got a law degree from a Florida college but never passed thebar examination.Miller allegedly used a Craigslist ad where he identified himself as Christopher Black, Esq., and offered legal services.Police became suspicious of Miller after he went to Mahoning Township police on March 7, identifying himself as an attorney, and asking questions about an ongoing investigation.On March 8, Mahoning and Jim Thorpe police met with Miller on Sixth Street in Jim Thorpe, and took him into custody on an outstanding warrant out of Florida. Diazepam pills were found on him at the time. Jim Thorpe police then filed charges against Miller.Miller has been in the county prison since his arrest and is still facing charges in Florida.He told Serfass, "I had no intention to defraud anyone. I was trying to help people. I made a mistake."On the charges Serfass sentenced him to serve one to one day less 24 months in prison with credit for 35 already served and paroled him. He was also ordered to render a total of 250 hours of community service, pay restitution to his victims totaling $1,700, pay court costs of about $1,000, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.
