Weatherly Hillclimb slated for June

The Weatherly Hillclimb will bring horsepower back to the streets of the borough the weekend of June 9-11.

The hill climb, which was first run in 1961, attracts between 80 and 100 amateur race car drivers to the small town with a big hill. All the activities are free to the public. The weekend kicks off the evening of June 9 with a parade. Police will shut down a route to let the race cars drive legally on the streets of the borough, accompanied by race supporters and the Lehigh & Lausanne Fire Co.'s rescue truck. On Saturday and Sunday, racing starts at 9 a.m. and runs through 5 p.m. Drivers will take their turn attacking the 1-mile course with steep gradients and a bump that will often send cars flying in the air.Food will be provided by local nonprofit groups including the Boy Scouts, Rotary, Little League, and Relay for Life participants.Local dignitaries like Commissioner Tom Gerhard will be in attendance. This year is notable in that the Weatherly Hillclimb Association is looking to add to its permanent home near the intersection of Laurel and Hill streets. The organization already owns an acre of property that was donated by the Kuhns family, former owners of Jim Thorpe River Adventures, and is hoping to add another small piece of property."Right around the time of our event, we should be purchasing another piece of property, Weatherly Hillclimb Association President Joseph Cyburt said.
