A Palmerton man faces charges after a search found he was in possession of drug paraphernalia.

Corey Scherer, 25, of the 100 block of Delaware Avenue, faces charges on one count each of flight to avoid apprehension, resisting arrest, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving under suspension.According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Shawn Leadbetter of the borough police department:At 8:40 p.m. March 22, Leadbetter was advised by an off-duty police officer that a man identified as Scherer was driving a silver Nissan Altima, the affidavit says.Scherer currently has an active warrant for his arrest out of the Carbon County Sheriff's Department and has a suspended driver's license out of Pennsylvania.Leadbetter saw Scherer driving the vehicle at the intersection of Sand Quarry Road and Columbia Avenue, and continued to follow the vehicle until it pulled into the rear parking lot of the Blue Mountain Pub.Upon approaching the vehicle and having a brief encounter with Scherer, he crawled over to the passenger side of the vehicle and fledin the rear parking lot of the business.A foot pursuit ensued in the rear parking lot. Leadbetter and Sgt. Christopher Ritter attempted to subdue Scherer.While attempting to take Scherer into custody, Leadbetter received abrasions on both knees and elbows.Scherer was eventually taken into custody and searched, during which one hypodermic needle was found in Scherer's left front pocket.A search of the vehicle Scherer was driving found 10 packets of clonazepam which Scherer did not have a prescription for, a black case which was found to have two more used hypodermic needles, silver spoons with white residue and used cotton swabs.Scherer is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. May 3 before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.
