Schuylkill man jailed for theft

A Schuylkill County man was jailed on Sunday after he was caught stealing from a county coal company.

State police at Frackville said Dustin Robert Gernert, 33, of 321 Hughes St., New Ringgold, has been charged with criminal attempt theft by unlawful taking.According to troopers about 7:33 p.m. a trooper on patrol found a pickup truck parked along a dirt road identified as Mile Road, which is about a half-mile from the village of Five Points, in Blythe Township, and on the property of the Joe Kuperavage Coal Company.The trooper checked the registration and it identified Gernert as the owner. The trooper then called the owner of the coal company to the scene for the purpose of gaining entrance to the mining operation to check the area due to prior criminal mischief and thefts.The trooper then found Gernert at a 1986 4600 Manitowac shovel. Evidence at the scene, and a confession by Gernert, showed that he was there for the purpose of stealing copper wiring from electrical wires and cables. Gernert cut various cables and wires, causing an estimated loss of $8,000.Gernert was arraigned before con-call District Judge James Reiley, of Pottsville, and committed to the county prison after failing to post $50,000 straight cash bail.
