St. Hill, Olewine first at Zephyr Relays

Jim Thorpe's Justin St. Hill and Northern Lehigh's Jillian Olewine both picked up first-place finishes at the Zephyr Relays on Saturday.

TRACKJim Thorpe, No. Lehigh, Tamaqua at Zephyr RelaysJim Thorpe, Northern Lehigh and Tamaqua all took part in the Zephyr Relays at Whitehall High School and turned in some strong individual showings.There were two individual first places from the three programs that highlighted the event, as St. Hill bested the field in the boys triple jump with a mark of 41-3.5, while Olewine took the same event in girls competition with a triple jump mark of 33-9.25.The Olympians' John Fikentscher had a great day, taking second in the discus throw (119-8), and third in the shot put (43-8.50).Other second-place finishes by local athletes came from Jim Thorpe's Brooke Cope in the girls shot put (35-8.50), Tamaqua's Shanna Brinkworth in the girls pole vault (8-6), and Northern Lehigh's Nick Miller in the boys pole vault (11-6).The Olympains' Trevor Keefer and the Blue Raiders' Matt Smarr tied for third in the boys pole vault with identical 11-0 marks. In girls events, the Bulldogs' Darby Pender had a third in the triple jump (32-9), and the Raiders' Kayla Holland finished third in the discus (96-8).Three area relay teams also had third-place finishes. The Northern Lehigh 800 sprint medley relay team of Amber Cieri, Karlyna Kemery, Olewine and Pender turned in a time of 2:11.9, Tamaqua's distance medley relay team of Kailee Carroll, April Gerber, Lottie Mateyak, and Sarah Maue finished in 13:57, and Jim Thorpe's 400 meter shuttle hurdle team of Camille Principe, Kylee Dulski, Jillian Peterson and Mackenzie Rosenberger finished in 1:21.3.BOYS TENNISJim Thorpe-Pleasant ValleyPleasant Valley yielded only three games to Jim Thorpe in the three singles matches as they cruised to a 5-0 non-league win.Jake Ammerman, Najja Francis and Josh Shaffner all prevailed in straights for the Bears in singles.SINGLESJake Ammerman (P) def.
