March 29, 1983 - Len Smith wins his first game as Northwestern's head baseball coach as Matt Saltzer leads the Tigers to a 12-3 Centennial League win over Northern Lehigh. Saltzer scatters eight hits and strikes out 15 to gain the mound victory. He also delivers an RBI hit during a seven-run sixth inning. Harry Comfort singles home two runs during a five-run first frame, while Larry Hosler and Kevin Oesterreich also finish the contest with two RBIs. Smith will coach 33 years at Northwestern and finish with 387 victories.
