Mahanoy City applies for demolition funds for 18 properties

MAHANOY CITY (AP) - Mahanoy City Borough Council approved at Tuesday's meeting a submission to the county demolition program that included a list of 18 blighted properties.

The request, made through Resolution 2017-3, also gives permission for borough Manager Daniel L. Lynch to submit the request on the borough's behalf. The total request for demolition funds is $250,000. Lynch said the borough will most likely not be successful for every property, but if a group of them are selected for the county funding, it could reduce the overall costs."County Administrator Gary Bender has mentioned the possibility of doing a large group all at once to get the best price (for demolition)," Lynch said."That's why we're going to send pretty much all of our properties for the program at once and maybe we can save some money."If a group of blighted properties can receive funding, it may be possible to solicit bids to get the best demolition price since contractors can reduce their expenses by working on multiple properties by bringing in demolition equipment into the borough at one time. The properties on the list to be submitted to the county program are either in repository or commissioner's status and include:• 612 W. South St. (repository).• 600 W. Railroad St. (commissioner's status). Property is to the rear of the lot and also is in danger of collapsing.• 602 W. Railroad St. (repository).
