Citizens' group Fair Districts PA will be holding a special meeting on gerrymandering this Saturday, in an attempt to end the political practice that leaves some residents feeling like their vote doesn't really count.

The meeting, to be held at the Eastern Monroe Public Library, will focus on action items and volunteer opportunities for those who wish to fight against redistricting to favor certain parties and politicians."Current PA policy allows elected officials to choose their voters instead of ensuring that voters choose their elected officials," a poster from the organization reads, calling out the practice for influencing legislation, creating safety zones for incumbent candidates, and punishing those who buck the party rules.Fair Districts PA, a project of the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania, is seeking to reform the redistricting rules into a more "impartial, transparent, and accountable practice," according to the group's website.Suggested standards for redistricting by the group include the encouragement of geographical compactness and respect for nature geographic features, as well as prohibitions for redrawing lines to favor or discriminate against a party or candidate.Priorities for reform revolve around assigning redistricting power to an independent commission, and instating a rule to conduct redistricting once per decade, following the census, with a strict deadline to complete the matter.Doors at the library will open at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments and conversation, with the meeting to follow from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.See related opinion on Page 8.
