Tamaqua resident Charles Heffelfinger Jr. will go to trial on charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault stemming from a Feb. 12 shooting on Orwigsburg Street.

On Tuesday, Judge Stephen Bayer determined there was enough evidence to hold for trial charges against Heffelfinger, 23, who is charged with shooting another man after an argument in the early hours of Feb. 12.The victim, Gary Reidel, testified at Tuesday's hearing that he was shot in the back after an argument outside of Heffelfinger's parents' home on Orwigsburg Street. Just before the shooting, Reidel and another man had driven Heffelfinger's father home from a bar where they all had been drinking.Reidel testified that Heffelfinger Jr., known as C.J., confronted him as he and another man tried to help Heffelfinger Sr. out of the car, leading to an argument."I was cursing at him, telling him to get inside (the house)," Reidel said. "I wasn't pleasant about it."Reidel and the other man, Troy Meckes, both testified that Reidel removed his shirt and offered to fight C.J., at which point he drew the gun.Meckes said that Reidel and C.J. wrestled for the gun, while Reidel said that he simply turned and ran when he saw it. He sustained a gunshot wound to the back.Reidel was conscious when police arrived, and told them that Heffelfinger shot him.Heffelfinger also allegedly told police later that night that he had shot Reidel, and allowed them to take the 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun believed to have been used.Outside the courtroom, Heffelfinger's father said that he did not believe Reidel's testimony.In addition to attempted homicide, Heffelfinger faces two counts of aggravated assault and simple assault.He is currently free on $75,000 bail.
